But there's at least one in-person run still going on, and it's happening this weekend in Camden, to help a locally founded nonprofit.
In Steve Bender's 30-plus years as a volunteer with the Upper Chichester Fire Department, he's noticed a lack of help surrounding at least one major issue facing many of the men and women who've made it their job to help others.
"We have very limited support for the firefighters and the first responders and the paramedics, even doctors and nurses for PTSD. Even here at home they see pretty much the same issues and struggles that our guys out fighting the wars do as well," Bender said.
That's why he founded the Fire Fighter Five Foundation. In an effort to raise awareness and money for their cause, for the last six years they've held the "Run 2 Respond Relay."
"From Maine all the way down to Maryland, it's about roughly 900 miles. It takes roughly nine days and it covers almost nine states," he explained.
This year the run continues, but there are some changes owing to social distancing.
Runners keep their own batons and do not hand them off, and they run their parts of the race either by themselves or with someone in their house.
But Sunday morning, the 17-year veteran Camden fire fighter decided to get a view of the city in a way he's seen before. He ran the circumference of it.
"It was definitely a different experience," he said. "A little over a full marathon race, so total was 26.6 miles."
Wilson took part in the relay to show solidarity and support. "During these times," he said, "the wellness of the first responders is even more critical, as everybody is suffering through the pandemic times."
The relay will bring runners to Philadelphia next weekend.
