PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Seven were hospitalized after a man driving a Gray Buick intentionally drove into a group of people as they were walking across the street, according to police.

Police say the incident that happened around 4 p.m. near 16th and Lehigh Avenue, started with an argument.

"Witnesses and some of the victims believe that this 44-year old driver intentionally drove into a crowd that was involved in a fight, possibly with the 44-year-old driver's family member, and that was his motivation to drive the vehicle into the crowd," said Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Small says after the accident, the driver was attacked by people in the neighborhood.

"Some people from the neighborhood pulled the 44-year-old driver out of the vehicle, and assaulted causing injuries to his face."

The driver has been charged with aggravated assault. He was taken to Hahnemann Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Five other pedestrians were taken to Temple Hospital. Two people are in stable condition. The conditions of the others are unknown at this time but they are believed to be non-life threatening.

This is a developing story.
