Attendees can watch the show from their cars at the Elmwood Park Zoo.
The Tarzan musical, based on the 1999 Disney animated movie and featuring songs by Phil Collins, is family-friendly — and made for social distancing. Troy Cooper, the producing artistic director for Prism Theatre Center, says audiences can watch from their cars or from the spaced out seating.
"The audience will then be spaced out every 6 feet, to the second grass line and then a car line will begin," he described, "so if people still want to get out but they don't want to be a part of a large crowd, they can still stay within their cars."
Temperature checks will be taken on the way in. Hand sanitizing and masks have all been incorporated into show preparation. And Cooper explained adapting the production to an outside setting at the Elmwood Park Zoo not only added an element of safety — but also magic.
"For the vine tricks and things, we have more height on those silks than we did inside," he said. "I think that adds to the family experience."
Actor Keith Warren, who plays Tarzan, said this is a great opportunity to bring back something both artists and audiences have been missing.
"Some people just can't live without the arts," he said. "I'm glad that this is happening for the people who need it as much as we do and I'm glad that we’re able to do it in a way that's not going to put anyone in harm's way."
The show is open Thursday through Sunday evenings until September 27. More information, including where to purchase tickets, can be found here.
