"Not every hero wears a cape. Plan and practice your escape," is the slogan of this year's fire prevention week, said Michael King, vice president of the Chester County Fire Chiefs Association.
"And that is important for every family to have an escape plan and be ready if there is an emergency," he advised.
Sleeping with bedroom doors closed is one of the many things people can do.
"That is a proven good fact. It creates a barrier between the fire and your sleeping children," he explained.
Make sure your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are operational.
And if there is a fire, stay low and close to the floor while making your escape.
Some people keep jugs of water in each bedroom to wet blankets in case of a fire and "Characteristically, that would work, wetting a blanket. Anything that would cover the face and help get oxygen into you body helping you breath through the smoke," he added.
He says many firehouses will be hosting open houses this week to educate the public on fire safety.
