PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Montgomery County teenager won the individual world title and a $3 million prize for his play in the online video game Fortnite during an international competition over the weekend in New York.

Kyle Giersdorf, 16, of Pottsgrove is known in the Fortnite world as "Bugha."

In the first-ever event of its kind, held by Epic, the game's creators, Giersdorf beat professional game players and streamers to capture the Fortnite World Cup.

He spoke with ESPN after winning the competition at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"Honestly, it's pretty surreal. I got out there and played amazing. And, then, pretty much just brought it home," he said.

Giersdorf told ESPN he had a game plan before taking the international stage.

"So, my strategy pretty much was like, get off to a big lead, which happened, and then from there on, just have consistent games. And also to shoot out the 'ballers,' because I knew some of the people that were also higher up were using those. So, put them at a disadvantage."

Giersdorf's hometown support system in New York included his mom, dad, brother, sister and an aunt.

He also had an online audience of tens of thousands looking on.

Did it make him nervous?

"First game, the nerves were a little bit there," he said. "But after that, I just eased in and realized that I could really take this home if I focused on it."

As to what he plans to do with his new fortune.

"Honestly, I'm going to save all the money and put it to my future."
