Titled "Portraits of Heroes, Portraits of You," the new series of programs centers around black history during the month of February at the Free Library along the Parkway and others around the city.
Kalela Williams with the library explains the list of free events is quite expansive.
"We have everything from multimedia book discussions, in which we use audio clips and podcasts to illuminate books like "She Came to Slay: The Life and Times of Harriet Tubman" by Erica Armstrong Dunbar, to "Becoming" with Michelle Obama," she explained.
She adds they also have a storytime of the book "Parker Looks Up: An Extraordinary Moment," which is about a little girl who stares up at Michelle Obama's portrait.
There will be panel discussions and author visits as well.
Williams says this year, the library has made a point to offer more black history programming year-round to bring attention to little known facts that aren't easily accessed elsewhere.
