ALDAN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — An investigation is underway after a police officer shot and killed a man in Aldan, Delaware County, overnight.
Police were called to the area of South Clifton and Aldan avenues around 3:30 a.m. Thursday. Investigators said someone had requested a courtesy ride from police so he could go to his father’s house in Upper Darby.
When police got there, authorities encountered a man with a knife. Sources said the situation escalated and he lunged at officers.
A female officer deployed a Taser, then fired her gun, fatally striking the man, officials said.
The officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.
The man’s father, Patrick Ilodigwe, said he doesn’t believe that account of events.
“He said he called 911, that he wants to come and see me,” he told NBC10. “There has to be an investigation on this. I don’t know what they are talking about. I don’t believe what they’re saying.”
Ilodigwe said his son suffered from mental health issues.
Officers from Sharon Hill, Lansdowne and Darby were on scene, as well as investigators with the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office. Several streets were blocked off for hours as detectives went over the area.
The officer is being placed on administrative duty while an internal investigation is underway, per department policy.
The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office is conducting the independent investigation.
