Free Philly summer camp promises to teach girls how to write computer code

Computer Coding

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) -- Men have most of the jobs in the tech industry. But a women's group is working to change that by giving girls a chance to learn how to write computer code during a summer camp in Philadelphia.

For seven weeks from June to August, high school sophomores and juniors will be immersed in computer coding.

"This is the first summer that we'll be running the program in Philadelphia," said Talya Oberfield, with Girls Who Code.

Oberfield says it's free.

"They don't need to have any coding experience whatsoever," she said. "We actually want to reach girls who might not think that they're interested. It's meant to build a foundation and expose girls to the range of possibilities of what it means to be a coder."

And not only is it free, they will also help girls pay for transportation and housing, if necessary.

"Up to $1,400 for girls who qualify," Oberfield said. "We don't want anyone who might otherwise be looking for a summer job to miss out on this opportunity."

It's 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday in Center City. The application deadline is Friday March 15.
