Giant joins stores reserving early hours for seniors during coronavirus pandemic

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Giant food stores are now joining other grocery and retail chains that are opening up their first hour of business to those 60 and older in response to the high demand and concerns during the coronavirus outbreak.

This trend started earlier in the week. A lot of people on social media had been calling for this to happen. 

Giant is open from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. to those who are 60 and older. 

Mandrack said she came early to pick up toilet paper, paper towels, fresh vegetables.

"Whatever I can get, actually. Shelves have been empty," she said.

Giant says they won’t be carding at the door, but they have the right to ask people to leave.

Whole Foods and Dollar General are also reserving their first opening hour for those who are 60 and above. Target is blocking off the first opening hour on Wednesdays. And Acme has set aside the first two opening hours, 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., Monday through Friday.
