PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Phoenixville family is up to something that could make a long-lasting difference for children facing pediatric cancer.

Maren Kaniewski was a 7-year-old who loved an adventure and traveling.

"Anyone who ever met her just always felt she was larger than life, she had a lot of energy. She didn't like us sitting around, she always wanted to be active and doing something," said her father, Rick.

Unfortunately, Maren's adventure was cut short after almost a yearlong battle with leukemia.

"I don't wanna scare people, but the truth is, it's not as rare as you may think. If you were to take a walk around your neighborhood and the towns you live in, you're going to run into more children that are battling cancer at some level than you ever realized," he said.

That's why the family hasn't let grief paralyze them and fighting cancer with a different strategy.

"You're gonna have 20 different cancers that are all getting a larger percent, children get four percent total," he said.

He says he hopes the bill can make it to Gov. Wolf's desk to be signed into law.

"Not everything works the way you want, I know that, my wife knows that, my family knows that better than most, doesn't mean you stop," he added.
