If someone who has dementia lives with you, that makes these times even more stressful. They’re no longer going to adult day care or the senior center and may not understand why their routine has been disrupted.
Monica Townsend, a specialist at the Comprehensive Services on Aging at Rutgers University, said don’t be surprised if there are problems.
“You may see them become a little more agitated because their routine has changed. They’re no longer being engaged in the way they used to before. The thing to help is get them back to some type of routine for them so that things are a little bit more calm for them and feel like things are a bit more normal,” she said.
Have them help with daily chores, folding laundry or cooking. Do a puzzle together or play a game they enjoy. You can also help them Skype or Facetime with friends from the center. And keep reassuring they are safe and this won’t last forever.
