PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The 31-year-old man who opened fire in a crowded Walmart in Cheltenham in 2018 because of how someone looked at him in the checkout line will spend at least 25 years in prison.

Montgomery County Judge Risa Ferman told Keenan Jones the fact no one was killed does not diminish the seriousness of his actions.

Jones was convicted of firing seven shots inside the crowded Walmart on Easton Road in August 2018.

The defense argued it was a psychotic break brought on by PTSD from watching his father and a close friend die in front of him after they were shot in his Germantown neighborhood, and a lack of sleep as his girlfriend went through a difficult delivery of his son on the day of the shooting.

Friends of Jones testified he was generally a happy, friendly person before he changed in the weeks leading up to the shooting.

But prosecutor Tonya Lupinacci argued for a longer sentence, saying regardless of someone’s past history, "no one has the right to walk into a crowded store and fire a reign of terror on innocent people."

"Although this sentence is significant, it just skims the surface for what these poor victims had to endure and went through since this occurred," Lupinacci said.

As Ferman sentenced Jones to 25 to 62 years in state prison, she acknowledged the need for mental health treatment, adding while he may not have gone to Walmart with the plans to shoot people, "once inside his actions were intentional."

Five people were wounded that day, and two police officers were injured taking Jones into custody.
