In a letter to the inspector general requesting the investigation, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Republican Rob Kauffman noted that DHS is responsible for monitoring county agencies and private agencies within the child welfare system.
Kauffman says the IG’s probe, by law, will be limited in scope.
“He cannot go into the county Children and Youth Services, which obviously, there appears to be some issues there. But he can look within the scope of the state departments," Kauffman said.
DHS has already conducted its own review of the case, but Kauffman says he hopes an independent investigation will lead to recommendations for potential legislative changes to the child welfare system.
