La Salle women's soccer team placed on probation amid hazing claims

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — La Salle University has placed its women's soccer team on probation, after an internal investigation into hazing claims.

Kayla Miller-People was a freshman on the team. Her dad, Al, said she was bullied by her teammates.

"You make her stand in a circle, and kick balls at them," he described of the activity, adding that it wasn't a part of practice.

Miller told CBS 3 Eyewitness News that after his daughter spoke up, she became depressed. That's when he claims the coach kicked her off the team.

"As a dad, I must admit to you, I was angry," Miller confessed.

Some students are shocked. "It's pretty surprising to me," said freshman Alexandra Straub. Freshman Jason Rosales added, "It's not the culture we have here on teams at La Salle, I believe."

La Salle released a statement, declaring the women's team has been placed on disciplinary probation and must now go through an educational workshop and do community service next semester.

"While the investigation found no behavior necessitating University disciplinary action against specific individuals, we take very seriously all claims of hazing and other forms of inappropriate behavior," the statement read. The school also said restrictions on competition would be implemented for the spring season.

The team's probation ends on December 31, 2020.

Last month, Ursinus College canceled the men and women's swim seasons over similar incidents, and University of Pennsylvania canceled the last two women's volleyball games.

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story said La Salle had canceled its women's soccer season. A La Salle spokesperson clarified that would not be the case.
