PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Gunshots rang through the streets of North Philadelphia's West Poplar section Saturday night while police were already responding to a large gathering nearby.
At least five people were shot near 10th and Brown streets, including a 16-year-old. The oldest victim is 26.
"There were about 200 kids or young people here in the intersection, standing behind us," described Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw.
Outlaw said officers were already near the scene due to reports of a large gathering. Around 11:30 p.m., they heard a loud boom up the street.
"Officers saw and heard what appeared to be a muzzle flash up the street from us and a loud boom and almost simultaneously," she explained. "Around the corner, we heard gunshots from a different type of weapon around the same time."
Outlaw believes someone knows something.
"There were a lot of people out here," she said. "We do believe that somebody knows who the shooters were and possibly can help us in identifying and figuring out exactly what happened."
As for the victims, the commissioner believes their injuries are not life-threatening.
Anyone with information about the shooting should contact police.
