CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A strategy has been announced to make the streets of Camden safer by targeting illegal ATVs and off-road vehicles.

Officials like Lt. Zsakhiem James of the Camden County Police Department say the drivers of these vehicles are reckless and have a blatant disregard for public safety.

"They're not just angering people, but they're scaring people, and that also causes accidents," he said. "Imagine that you're driving down the road and here comes this illegal vehicle that you don't expect to be coming up next to you, and the guy comes up next to you on two wheels and you hear this loud machine and you look out your window, and there is a vehicle that shouldn't be there.

James said the new app had a tremendous amount of success tracking down nuisance vehicles.

Lawmakers are working on a plan to increase penalties from fines that currently range from $250 to more than $1,000. Lawmakers are also proposing the suspension of driver's licenses and the destruction of confiscated vehicles.
