BETHLEHEM, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — A Lehigh Valley company is now developing a home test for people to use to find out if they have the coronavirus.

Dr. Stephen Tang, president and CEO of OraSure Technologies in Bethlehem, says his scientists and researchers now have one target.

“Develop a COVID-19 antigen, at-home self test,” Tang said. “This is an all hands on deck race against the clock and we’re devoting all our expertise, our knowledge and our sweat-equity to make this happen.”

The test is part of what Tang called his OraQuick line, which has the user swab the inside of the mouth.

The swab — which collects virus antigens — is attached to an electronic device which processes the collected material and provides a result within 20 minutes showing whether or not you have COVID-19.

Tang said his group came up with a similar home test for HIV.

“We’re the only company that has an FDA-approved oral fluid-based HIV at-home test,” Tang said.

And, his researchers continued to tackle another serious virus.

“Last year, for an Ebola antigen rapid test in nine months time so we’re very uniquely positioned to accomplish this (COVID-19 home test) in four to six months,” Tang said.

He’s hoping to get the home test out before the end of the summer.

Tang says once it’s approved, he’s looking to distribute millions of the tests throughout the country.

He says you’ll be able to buy the self test at your local pharmacy or pick one up at your doctor’s office.
