MOUNT EPHRAIM, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A deadly escape room fire in Poland has put people on edge about taking part in the popular game.

Escape rooms come as pirate ships, space ships, haunted houses and more.

"An escape room is a one hour themed adventure where you are tasked with solving a series of challenges to complete an objective," said Corey Rice, who owns Venture Escape Room in Mount Ephraim, New Jersey.

It's one of a few dozen of the rooms located throughout the Delaware Valley.

Rice says his escape room, like many others, takes a number of different measures to help keep players safe as they look to avoid fatal tragedies, like the fire that killed five people last week in Poland that is said to have a number of safety issues.

"We also are always monitoring the game with a game master. No matter how many rooms are running, there's always someone looking over, making sure everyone is safe," Rice said.

Rice says even though the objective is to get out of a room, they make sure no matter what, you can get out.

"There's actually no lock mechanism on the entry way, and you always have access to the door to then leave," Rice added.

Venture Escape Room, like others in the States, must pass an inspection when they are built and follow safety standards.

"We also have regular fire inspections, so everything is always up to code," he said.

And in many escape rooms, tools used in the game can double as safeguards.
