PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was shot dead behind the counter of a South Philadelphia corner store Tuesday night. Police are trying to figure out who killed him and why.
The 31-year-old victim, according to police, is the son of the store owner. In remembrance, there are flowers and candles tied to a stop sign in front of this store at Ninth and Porter streets.
Small said medics determined he had been shot once in the chest. He died at the hospital.
Regular customers and people in the neighborhood, like Terry Gibbs, were left stunned.
Gibbs says this wasn't his regular store, but something like this could happen to any of them.
"Most of the time, these guys are by themselves," he said. "From what I hear, the owner's a really nice guy. I heard the son was a nice guy."
Neighbors like Butch Hamilton said this violence shouldn't be happening.
"I got a 5-year-old and a 9-year-old, and this is crazy. It's too close to home. It makes no sense. It's very senseless," Hamilton said.
Police haven't identified the victim. They believe two men were involved, but they have not yet determined a motive.
"The cash register is still in the cashier booth. We don't know if anything was taken," Small said.
There are several surveillance cameras in the vicinity that police are hoping will lead to a break in the case.
