All types of bullying are harmful, but food allergy bullying can be life-threatening.
"What people don't understand is that this is a food that can actually kill them. It can kill them either by touch, in some cases, or by accidental ingestion. And so that level of bullying really heightens up to a fear level that is incomprehensible," said FARE CEO Lisa Gable.
One-third of kids with food allergies say they've experienced this type of bullying, Gable said.
"This obviously not only decreases the quality of life for a child, but it adds an undo amount of stress for a child that already has to manage and contain their avoidance to this particular food."
Gable added there are no proven cures or therapies for food allergies.
"So it's a very serious disease and it's actually a disease that's actually rising in numbers," she said.
FARE is working with students and schools to help educate kids and raise awareness about the danger.
