Marty Small will be Atlantic City's mayor for at least the next year

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Marty Small was unanimously selected by his City Council colleagues in Atlantic City to take over as Mayor until voters decide next year on a replacement to Frank Gilliam, who resigned after pleading guilty to theft charges in federal court earlier this month. 

Small, a 12-year veteran of council, was one of three people on a list local Democratic party leaders approved to take the reins of city government. 

The other two threw their support to Small almost immediately. In November 2020, voters will decide who serves the final year of Gilliam’s term. 

And yes, Small will run.

"I’m in this for the long haul. Obviously that will be the choice of the people and I understand and respect that. But listen. At the end of the day, I’m just going to give it my all and do the best job I can," he said.

Next month, voters in Atlantic City’s 2nd Ward will see Small’s name on the ballot running unopposed for a term on council. 

It’s too late to get the ballot changed, but party leaders will select someone after the election to fill that City Council seat.
