The jury agreed with prosecutors that Maurice Green walked into 81-year-old Marie Buck’s corner store at 6th and Titan streets on Christmas Eve of 2016, and fatally shot her 11 times because he was seeking revenge for his stolen gold chain, which they say her grandson pawned for drugs.
Assistant District Attorney Joanne Pescatore tried the case for over a week, along with Assistant District Attorney Matt Krouse.
"She was a mother, a wife, a grandmother. She was loved by the community, and what happened to her was just a heinous crime," Pescatore said.
Green, who represented himself through the six-day trial, said he’s innocent and tried to discredit witnesses, experts and detectives as they testified.
But prosecutors showed surveillance video, used cell phone records and ballistics testing, all of which they say points to Green.
Green was also convicted of gun charges and recklessly endangering an 89-year-old woman who was also in the corner store during the shooting. He also was held in contempt of court for an outburst involving a witness.
This was Green’s second trial, after another ended in a hung jury.
It was the last trial for Common Pleas Court Judge Sandy Byrd who retires this month.
"And I think you could really tell by the look on his face that this case really affected him and it affected everybody who was in the courtroom," Pescatore added.
