As part of an effort to keep voters and poll workers as safe as possible during the coronavirus pandemic, the number of polling places would be reduced from 352 to 140 for the June 2 primary.
“Most polling locations will host three or more precincts,” Montgomery County Commissioner Ken Lawrence said.
Also for the primary, the country would move polls to public school buildings, Lawrence said.
“Since normal school operations are suspended for the remainder of the year, school buildings provide a space that provides the least chance of exposure,” he said.
Lawrence also says schools have parking space for larger-than-usual polling places and more space for social distancing.
The Montgomery County Board of Elections plans to vote on the proposal on Monday, May 11. The proposed changes would be only for the primary, and not November’s general election.
Lawrence recommends voters apply for mail-in ballots. The deadline to sign up is May 26.
