The money comes from the federal CARES Act, and chair of the county commissioners Dr. Val Arkoosh says it’s to help schools absorb some of the costs associated with re-opening during the pandemic.
“I can personally attest to how hard our school superintendents and elected school boards are working,” she said.
Commissioner Ken Lawrence added, “Our school districts are struggling as they figure out whether they’re going virtual or hybrid or in person, so I’m glad the county is able to provide this funding to help all of our school districts help all of our children.”
The county is using the federal funding formula instead of the state funding formula. The federal formula takes into account the number and percentage of students in poverty in each district along with the amount of state funding.
Norristown Area School District will get the most of the $15 million of any schools in the county, $3.2 million.
