Law, who is bi-racial, believes he did not receive enough education on race matters while attending schools within his Moorestown community.
“We need to listen to Black and brown voices, and we also need to develop plans and develop some sort of systemic change,” he said, “and that's what we're trying to do within the school system.”
Law helped create the Moorestown Alumni for Racial Equity & Inclusion group, or MAREI, after the nationwide outcry over the death of George Floyd. Group members developed a thorough plan for a renewed curriculum, which they will present to the Moorestown Board of Education.
“The goal of this plan is to create a more racially inclusive space for everyone,” said Carlie Blessing, alumna and MAREI member, “and also have our educators be equipped with the language and the tools to start these conversations.”
MAREI’s plan includes bias and racial sensitivity training, and the recruitment of more teachers of color.
