Murphy: NJ beaches will be open by Memorial Day, with restrictions

AVALON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Gov. Phil Murphy says he expects New Jersey beaches to be open by Memorial Day — with restrictions in place.

“I will be shocked if our beaches are not open, but with very specific guidance, just as we opened county and state parks,” Murphy said in an interview with NJTV.

He says he’s not exactly sure yet how it would work at the Shore, but for the parks, he said, restricting parking capacity to 50% has made it possible to limit the number of people.

Right now, each shore town is handling things on their own timeline. As of Friday, some beach restrictions are lifted in Avalon, Stone Harbor, North Wildwood and Wildwood, but shops and dine-in restaurants are still closed.

Meanwhile, Sea Isle and Ocean City beaches are still closed. In Atlantic City, the beaches were never closed.

Guidance from the governor could make things more consistent.

Cape May County submitted a 35-page reopening proposal to the governor, including plans to get shops and dine-in restaurants running while practicing social distancing.

The county would also restrict short-term rentals until after the holiday.

The governor has not commented specifically on that, but he said he’s been talking to officials down here.

“The great news is the municipalities and counties up and down the shore have been great to work with. We have a high level of communication,” Murphy said.

Officials say one thing is certain: This Memorial Day weekend will be like no other.
