PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A new app created by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, gives users insight into the cleanliness of their favorite restaurants.

The free mobile app, called Eat Safe PA, provides the health inspection history of restaurants around the state.  Shannon Powers with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture says the goal is to keep people healthy.

"Part of the goal of the department is to help educate restaurant owners and operators," said Powers. "You know, we're not just out to whammy restaurants."

Some Philadelphians seemed intrigued by the new app.  Many said they look up reviews, so why not health inspection reports?

"I think as a consumer you want to be informed to know where you're eating and what the benefits would be," said Sean Cosgrove.

Others like Kam Arnold, from West Philadelphia, agreed. "We need that in Philadelphia!"

Miriam Minto of Philadelphia said she also prefers to be informed. "We pay for it so we really want to know how clean it is."

Powers explained how the app works. "When you open it, you get pins just like pins on a map that show you the restaurants near you or say you're traveling to a city and you want to search for restaurants."
