PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Police Department said the officer accused of leaving the scene of a fatal hit-and-run last month in Olney without rendering aid or making a proper police report has been suspended without pay with the intent to dismiss.
The incident happened around 1:45 a.m. on Aug. 27 on Rising Sun Avenue, near Olney Avenue.
Video shows a Philadelphia police officer pull up in his cruiser next to the victim — 48-year-old Eugene Beauford — who was stumbling on his feet in the bike lane. The officer gets out and checks on him, then gets back in his cruiser and leaves Beauford lying on his back in the bike lane.
Minutes later, Beauford was hit by a speeding green Kia Sportage.
The same officer was the first to respond to the scene, but investigators said he did not render aid, and he left without making the proper police report classifying the incident as an auto accident.
The officer from the 35th District had been on the force for two years. He was put on administrative leave shortly after the incident. He is now suspended without pay, with the intent to dismiss after 30 days.
The officer has not been identified.
Police said the hit-and-run vehicle has been identified; an investigation is still underway. No charges have been filed at this time.
