New Jersey announces reopening of MVC offices June 15 — but with major changes

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Motor vehicle offices in New Jersey are reopening June 15 from their coronavirus closures — but there are big changes. 

Gov. Murphy said Motor Vehicle Commission offices are set to resume drop-off services when New Jersey begins the move into Stage Two of its coronavirus restrictions.

"We know that there's a lot of pent-up demand for these services, and the Motor Vehicles Commission is ready,” Murphy said. 

But there are major changes. 

MVC locations will do either driver’s licenses or vehicle services, but not both, said MVC administrator Sue Fulton.

"Licensing centers will offer all license and ID transactions as well as driver testing. Vehicle centers will offer registration, title and license plate transactions,” Fulton explained. 

Drivers’ road tests are tentatively scheduled to resume June 29, and the agency is adding 11 road test courses to tackle a three-month drivers’ test backlog.

Fulton said MVC centers will have Plexiglas barriers and everyone inside will be required to wear face masks.

The state has now reported 163,336 positive coronavirus cases, with 12,049 coronavirus-related fatalities.

NOTE: A previous version of the story indicated MVC offices are set to resume in-person services upon Stage Two. That has been clarified to indicate the offices will resume drop-off services.
