PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — City officials are monitoring the air quality near a chemical plant in Southwest Philadelphia, where a fire broke out Monday night.The fire happened at the Kinder Morgan fuel facility at 63rd Street and Passyunk Avenue.
There aren't any houses near the intersection, but there are many businesses and a lot of drivers on Passyunk Avenue. An emergency at this plant can put a lot of people at risk.
Officials say fire broke out at a cargo pump, which is right by an ethanol tank. And some of the ethanol got out.

December 17, 2019 The plant was evacuated as firefighters arrived. A fire department spokeswoman says firefighters came within a few feet of the flames so they could shut off a valve and cut off the ethanol.
The 100 firefighters on scene were able to bring this situation under control within a few hours.
Officials say no one was hurt, and they're keeping tabs on the air quality. Authorities say initial testing showed no danger to the public.

December 17, 2019 The site is about a mile away from the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery, which was closed down after an explosion and fire last summer. The Philadelphia Fire Department tweeted late Monday that this fire is not related to the refinery.
