PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia’s premier African art Gallery is closing after more than 30 years of business.

Since 1988, Karen Riggs, founder of Tribal Home, has been the go-to curator of authentic African artifacts in Philadelphia, from ceremonial wardrobes, fertility statues to masks from across the continent.

Riggs, also known for her lectures at museums, is legendary at this point.

“I was determined to be different in my gallery and to offer the education, origins and cultural traditions,” Riggs said.

However, after three decades on Third Street in Old City, Riggs is ready to bow out gracefully.

“I’m very up close and personal when it comes to teaching artifacts and what have you. It’s been a bit odd for me wearing a mask trying to sell a mask,” she said.

She’s not completely out of the community, though, and will continue guest speaking at the Barnes Foundation.

The gallery will officially close Aug. 31.
