Penn State student who was studying in Italy talks about her trip back to US

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Many Pennsylvania State University students who were studying abroad in Italy are back home.

The university ended the program in Italy, where the coronavirus death toll has soared.

One student's dream semester in Italy is officially done about three months earlier than she planned.

The Chester County native was upset, but understanding.

The jetlagged junior, who wanted to stay anonymous, said before she and other students were allowed to board their flight out of Rome early Thursday, they had to have their temperatures taken, and then wait.

"They tell you whether or not you're OK to keep proceeding or not, in my case, I was OK to keep going," she said.

Once onboard, some passengers were putting on masks. She didn't, but made sure to sanitize everything.

Her family is relieved to have her home, and that's where she'll be for a while because of safety measures.

"Students returning from Italy are supposed to be staying inside their homes for 14 days," she explained.

For the rest of the semester, the 21-year-old will be taking her Perugia, Italy courses online. It's not what she expected, but she has a positive outlook.

"I think people would rather be safe than sorry," she added.
