PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Mayor Jim Kenney easily won re-election Tuesday and promised to continue to fight to give every Philadelphian the chance to succeed.
Kenney gave a characteristically brief victory speech, summarizing the accomplishments of his first term.
"We invested half a billion dollars in new funding for our schools, returned the school district to local control and took on an entire industry to fund free pre-K for our youngest children," he said.
And he made a general promise for his next term.
"I want Philadelphia to be a city of equity, where everyone has the same chance to succeed, no matter what neighborhood they grew up in," he said.
The mayor had not really campaigned, choosing to ignore his Republican challenger "Billy for Philly" Ciancaglini. Still, he won by 65 percentage points.
