Philly School Board open for nominations

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Nominations are open for the next Philadelphia Board of Education, but it appears likely that some current members will return.

The education nominating panel has convened and will be taking nominations online or by mail until Jan. 23.

He says he's pleased with their performance since they were appointed to replace the School Reform Commission two years ago.

"Our test scores are improving, our graduation rate is improving, the climate in our schools is improving. We have more high-performing schools than we did before."

Wendell Pritchett, chairman of the panel, says that doesn't mean the results will be foreseeable.

"We have a job to do, and we take that seriously, and you never know in life what things will happen in any process," Pritchett said.

This year, there will be an extra step for the final nine. Under a charter change approved by voters two years ago, City Council will have veto power over the mayor's choices.
