PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead and six more wounded at a Philadelphia Housing Authority apartment complex in North Philadelphia.

Neighbors were startled around midnight by gunfire that police say happened in a courtyard at the Spring Garden Apartments, in the area of 8th and Wallace streets.

"Pop, pop, pop! It sounded like a warzone," said a neighbor

"It sounded like there was a gun battle back here," said Alex Gonzalez, who lives in the complex.

There is dried blood on the pavement and bullet holes in several cars and homes — including Gonzalez's.

"We had a bullet go through our window," he said. "My mother is sick. She lives on the first floor, downstairs. The bullet came in. We heard it. It sounded like a beam come through the window, shatter the window."

His mother, he added, is paralyzed. He says he's incredibly thankful one of those stray shots didn’t find her.

Neighbors say they wonder if the violence will ever end."It’s just crazy. It’s really crazy. It’s sad that we have to go around and shoot each other," said a woman who used to live at the complex but now lives a few blocks away. “I don’t have any answers. The only answer I can give is to pray."

Another man said, "This doesn’t have to happen. But they don’t realize the severity of the people’s lives they’re taking and the devastation that it’s causing the families."

Police say cash was scattered all over the ground when they got to the scene. There have been no arrests, and no weapons have been recovered.

Investigators have been talking to neighbors to see if they can shed some light on what happened and why. Neighbors say there was gambling going on.
