Philadelphia police say the incident took place Feb. 14 when they got a call about a robbery on 22nd and Somerset streets in North Philadelphia.
They say when officers got to the area, they saw someone who fit the description of the person they were looking for.
The officers say as they were frisking the 17-year-old, they hit an object that felt like a gun. When that happened, the teen took off and reached for his waist.
That's when they shot the suspect, put him in handcuffs and found a gun that police say belonged to him.
He was taken to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.
Officials say he was shot in the back and the thigh.
The teen is charged with firearms violations, resisting arrest and related offenses.
