State Attorney General Gurbir Grewal said the incident involved a three-hour standoff between police and 26-year-old Eric Smith, who the local police were trying to arrest.

The tense standoff began just before noon, when police say Smith shot at them from a rooftop after he broke free from officers.

There were no reports of injuries.

Salem County government said the Salem County campus is no longer under lockdown.

"The suspect fired multiple rounds from a handgun at the task force members," said Salem Police Chief John Pelura. "At least one task force member returned fire. There were no law enforcement injuries. Law enforcement took cover, established a perimeter. The schools were placed on lockdown."
