CEO Jonathan Sanford said in this time of social distancing the concept of a drive-in theater has found new life. And, while movies on a huge screen are the main attraction now, Sanford said he’s looking at bigger possibilities.
"The ultimate goal is eventually to allow these venues to show things like live-streamed concerts, potentially serve as a venue for live touring shows like stand-up comedy tours," Sanford explained. "Anything that needs a venue that can no longer do that in the current world."
Sanford said he has a dozen similar drive-ins set up across the country.
The Oaks screen will carry a Blake Shelton concert Saturday night. Sanford said if the site draws a good crowd, it will probably stay for a while.
Sanford says his goal is to build his own network that performers will recognize as having wide reach. And, he said, he wants to share with those who created the legacy.
“Ultimately we hope that the existing drive-in theaters join as affiliates with us so that they can tap into this and be a part of that network,” Sanford said. “And then it really is rising tides lifting all boats at the same time.”
Tickets are sold per car and are available only online.
