PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's not orthopedic work. This joint replacement will shift traffic lanes on the Delaware Memorial Bridge starting on Labor Day.
The nearly three-month project on the Delaware Memorial Bridge will close two of the four lanes on the northbound span, starting Sept. 7. That leaves six total lanes for traffic on the twin spans.
Delaware River and Bay Authority Chief Operations Officer Vince Meconi said two northbound lanes will remain open on the northbound span, and a third lane will run northbound on the southbound span.
"We're going to create what's called a contraflow lane or a bypass lane. So there will be two lanes going north, in other words, to New Jersey. There will be two lanes of traffic on the northbound span and one on the southbound span separated by a Jersey concrete barrier," Meconi said.
Delaware River and Bay Authority
Crews are removing and replacing 46 bridge joints.
The DRBA expects the work will be finished by Nov. 24, just before the holiday travel season.
