PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — It's not orthopedic work. This joint replacement is shifting traffic lanes on the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
Construction work began on Labor Day, and the nearly three-month project will close two of the four lanes on the northbound span, leaving six total lanes for traffic on the twin spans.
Delaware River and Bay Authority Chief Operations Officer Vince Meconi said two northbound lanes will remain open on the northbound span, and a third lane will run northbound on the southbound span.
"We're going to create what's called a contraflow lane or a bypass lane. So there will be two lanes going north, in other words, to New Jersey. There will be two lanes of traffic on the northbound span and one on the southbound span separated by a Jersey concrete barrier," Meconi said.

Crews are removing and replacing 46 bridge joints.
The DRBA expects the work will be finished by Nov. 24, just before the holiday travel season.
