The shelter currently has double the capacity of cats, and they are all looking for forever homes.
Due to COVID-19, in-person cat adoptions are not allowed in PSPCA’s North Philadelphia facility. Instead, meet-and-greets are conducted online.
However, the lack of face-to-face interaction with potential owners has slowed down the adoption process.
The PSPCA was already full when it recently rescued 105 cats from a hoarding situation. Now, more than 200 felines are looking for homes.
“It’s really been challenging for us,” said PSPCA spokesperson Gillian Kocher. “We’ve been doing lots of adoptions outside with our dogs, but you can’t bring a cat outside and have them meet in a yard. It wouldn’t be safe for us, and we probably wouldn’t be able to keep the cats from running away.”
Don’t be discouraged by the remote process. The shelter encourages potential adopters to take a look at adoptable cats online, fill out an application, and schedule a Zoom meeting.
“One of our counselors will reach out and go over the process either over the phone or via email,” she explained, “and then we are doing Zoom meets with the cats so people can then get to know them without physically coming into the building.
“We are looking for people to step up and adopt,” Kocher added. “Now is a great time.”
