'Rage room,' Gritty makeovers lead new Wells Fargo Center attractions

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Fans at Wednesday night's Flyers home game didn't just get their first in-person glimpse at the team this season. They also go to see some unique additions to the Wells Fargo Center for the first time.

"This has been a year of firsts at the Wells Fargo Center," said Chief Business Officer Mike Shane. "We've got our first all-inclusive club. We've got our first-ever standing room ticket. We've got our first-ever rage room in any arena anywhere."

Rage room?

"It's exactly what it sounds like," he said. "It is your chance to go into a room and do all the things you weren't allowed to do — which is just smash stuff."

"It was fun."

He said his favorite tool to use was the bat.

"The bat is easy to weild, and it was easy to throw up a couple plates and smash those. It was a good time, definitly a good time," he said.

"It's definitely a little steamy in there. Five minutes is a long time," he said. "I even told them, 'I'm not going to last five minutes,' but you break them pretty quick, and then it slows down."

Shane said the rage room is not about being frustrated with your home team, but rather "it's actually about the love for your team."

The items available to smash in the rage room have stickers on them the logo of whatever team the Flyers or Sixers are playing that night.

"A lot of what we did this year is about appealing to the entire market, and we wanted to have something for everybody when they came here," Shane said. "Hockey is the centerpiece, and that's why you come. But between periods, and when you get here early, we want to have something that is interesting and fun for everyone."

A less intense attraction for Flyers fans is the Gritty C.O.M.M.A.N.D. Center, where you get a Gritty makeover. Anthony, age 9, was the first in line for that.

He said when he first saw himself, he thought, "What did I do to myself?"
