POTTSTOWN, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Looking for a way to end the summer? The Schuylkill River Greenways National Heritage Area has a few ideas.

The group oversees a stretch of the river that runs through Montgomery County, and it is currently promoting its Take It Outdoors program with a Pottstown-based outfitter.

Executive Director Elaine Paul Schaefer said one opportunity combines biking and kayaking along the river.

“You would take a bike and you would ride it up about 4 or 5 miles up the river. They’d meet you at the park, where you would get in the river,” she said. “They would take your bike from you. And then, you’d get into the river with the kayak that they provided you, and kayak back to where you started.”

The bike rental is free, but there’s a nominal fee to rent the kayak from the outfitter, which the Greenways group recently acquired.

As for the float part of the trip, Schaefer said it’s a stretch of the river above Pottstown that’s good for first-timers as well as experienced paddlers.

“It’s a very, very forgiving and enjoyable spot of the river,” she said. “There are no rapids. For beginners and for people who this might be their first or second time out, it’s very easy to do.

“They really do cater to all levels,” Schaefer continued. “You can be an absolute beginner and go. And, they even have learn-to-kayak mornings that you can sign up for if you’re not comfortable going alone.

“On Wednesday evenings, they do an outing for people who have their own kayaks and just want to paddle around on the river.”

Schaefer said kayaking has become a very popular form of recreation.

“This is one of the very few things you can do with comfort during COVID-19,” she noted. “It’s one of those sports — you can get out in nature, enjoy the river, and you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to do it.”

Schaefer said groups or individuals are welcome on the Schuylkill adventures Wednesdays through Sundays.
