Visitors aren’t allowed in hospitals during pandemic, but some are making certain exceptions

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)  Visitations at most hospitals are on hold for now because of the COVID-19 crisis, but some hospitals are making exceptions when it comes to births and deaths.

At Jefferson Health's hospitals in Philadelphia and New Jersey, you can request to be present at the beginning of someone's life or at the end.

"We want to make sure that we are allowing families to be with their loved ones,” said Stephanie Conners, chief operations officer for Jefferson Health.

"And when those loved ones are able to be by the patients’ side, we provide them with the protective equipment that is necessary and it's the same protective equipment that we supply to our employees,” Conners added.

One support person will be allowed to be with the laboring mom.

"We protect the baby by making sure everyone around the infant has a mask and so that baby is well protected, because we don't allow anyone near the baby without being protected themselves,” she explained.

At the last stage of life, the hospital will do its best to accommodate those who wish to say goodbye.
