The state has said Pennsylvania schools in "yellow" or "green" counties may hold in-person classes July 1, with approved health and safety plans.
In Philadelphia, summer school is going to be entirely online.
Superintendent William Hite has said the School District of Philadelphia is considering a full in-person return to classrooms, remaining fully virtual, or a hybrid of both for the fall.
And while some schools are considering starting their school years and ending their semesters earlier, Hite said if anything, in Philadelphia, the Aug. 24 first day for staff could be delayed.
"There are lots of things that we're going to have to do, probably with our educators to actually plan for. So we may need more time before we start. So we may consequently push our start date back versus making it earlier," he shared.
Asked about concerns over a possible second wave of the coronavirus this fall, Pennsylvania education secretary Pedro Rivera said the state is planning for the best but preparing for the worst when it comes to schools opening.
