Many were doing double-takes while driving by, watching the escaped emu run around the median — causing backups in both directions.
On Thursday, police said the large bird’s owner reportedly lost control of it shortly after buying it. Officers failed to wrangle the animal.
“The bird was creating a traffic hazard and attempts to capture it failed,” read a statement from a Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson. “Taser deployments to gain control of the animal were unsuccessful. … For the protection of officers and the community, the emu was shot and did not survive.”
