AVALON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Townsends Inlet Bridge was reopened Thursday night several days ahead of schedule. It was originally planned to open on July 30.
The closure of the bridge, which connects Sea Isle and Avalon, has been an inconvenience for drivers since it closed in September 2018 for construction work.

It usually took five to 10 minutes to cross the bridge, but it has taken drivers about half an hour to get between the two shore towns — but that detour is no longer.

Businesses and residents suspected the bridge would open Friday, but construction has been completed earlier.

The first ones to take a ride on the NOW REOPENED Townsends Inlet Bridge are members of the construction crew who have been working on the bridge for the last ten months. Oh, and they’re on Go Karts! @KYWNewsradio pic.twitter.com/2iiMaxjNRx

To celebrate the reopening of the bridge, members of the construction crew were the first to take a ride on the bridge. But they didn't just drive their cars - they were on go-carts.

A long line of cyclists and cars were also waiting excitedly for the moment the cones were removed, while people were cheering and celebrating.

And to keep the good news coming, there will be no tolls until Monday.
