TRENTON, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — The City of Trenton is facing a potential short-term financial crisis.

Mayor Reed Gusciora says state officials have informed them that they are not authorized to make any payments, since they have failed to adopt a budget as required by law by a deadline of April 11.

That could affect some 1,000 city employees due to be paid on May 2. The city must either pass a budget or an emergency resolution by April 30 in order to meet payroll.

An emergency meeting of City Council is scheduled at noon Tuesday to address the situation.
