The Upper Darby School District owns the land and has been leasing the fields on North Springfield Road to the borough of Clifton Heights for a dollar a year since 1977. The school board unanimously voted to end the lease and to start the process of getting permits to build on the property.
Clifton Heights residents have been pushing back at the idea of building the school at the site.
The district says another middle school is necessary because of overcrowding at the two existing schools, Drexel Hill and Beverly Hills Middle Schools.
District officials say if they build elsewhere, they’ll have to spend a lot more money because they’ll have to buy property.
The borough is threatening legal action to stop the move.
