Vineland's Delsea Drive-In prepares to reopen, with new social distancing guidelines

VINELAND, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Gov. Phil Murphy gave the green light to more businesses to reopen this week, including drive-in movie theaters. There's only one in New Jersey and the owners are preparing like they never have before.

The Delsea Drive-In is reopening Friday, May 22, with a few changes.

"We do realize that we can not open up at full capacity because we are now increasing the distance between vehicles," said co-owner Jude DeLeonardis.

DeLeonardis said cars will now be 10 feet apart, to ensure social distancing.

"We're hoping what that means is that folks can still sit in the beds of their pickup trucks, folks can still sit in their hatchbacks," she said.

Delsea is limiting the amount of cars by offering online sales only to start the season, which also includes concessions.

"I know that the public is really anxious," said DeLeonardis, "but I would hope that they consider that this is not something that is done by a stroke of my key on my laptop. It's kind of a concerted effort."

She said she hopes to get sales up by the end of the weekend.

The Delsea Drive-In was originally built in 1949, but closed down in 1987. DeLeonardis and her pediatrician husband, John, reopened it in 2004 and have been running it ever since.

The couple, who have four kids, said South Jersey needed some family-friendly fun.

DeLeonardis said their goal was "to deliver what we always delivered, a good night out with your family and friends."
