Investigators say 21-year-old sophomore Eric Smith was a former resident of the College Park Apartments, a university complex, where gunshots were reported at around 4 a.m. Friday.
Smith was found lying in a hallway.
Multiple reports say two people were arrested nearby a short time later based on a tip given to responding officers, and that one of them was carrying a weapon.
The chief of the university police department, W.P. Chedester, calls the shooting an isolated incident and says a motive has not yet been established.
The suspects have been identified as 21-year-old Terrell Linear and 20-year-old Shaundrius Reeder.
"It's always a tragedy when a young person loses his life, Our hearts go out to his family, those students and others who knew him. Our main priority right now is offering support to our campus community," dean of students Corey Farris said in a statement.
